Prevention of Early Asthma in Kids (PEAK)
The Arizona Respiratory Center took the lead in developing and implementing the CARE Network's first study, Prevention of Early Asthma in Kids (PEAK). The study will last 3 years and will involve 260 children nationwide. Children ages 2 to 4 who are at high risk for asthma will be treated either with Fluticasone, an inhaled corticosteroid, or with a placebo (no active medication).

Information gleaned from the study will be used to answer these three questions:
- Will long-term corticosteroid therapy in children age 4 and under prevent the development of significant asthma later, at ages 4 to 6?
- Will this therapy prevent the reduced lung function and airway reactions characteristic of early onset asthma?
- What, if any, side effects result from long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids by young children?
