The Relationship of Respiratory Syncytial Virus and the Fungus Alternaria to Asthma

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of illness and death among infants and a major risk factor for asthma. Sensitization to the fungal allergen, Alternaria, before age 3 is also a strong risk factor for asthma, particularly in Arizona. This study aims to uncover the mechanisms by which the immune response to these two agents early in life increases the risk of developing asthma. It also seeks to learn the mechanisms by which mutual sensitization to Alternaria and RSV infection early in life raises the risk of asthma.
