Basic Asthma Management Skills

Asthma is a complex disease that can severely impact the lives of those who suffer from it. Healthcare practitioners play a critical role in positively influencing patient behaviors toward asthma control and management. In partnership with the American Lung Association of Arizona, we are pleased to offer BAMS, a comprehensive certification program designed to update healthcare practitioners on current asthma management. Interactive sessions led by trained facilitators will utilize case scenarios, hands-on demonstrations and techniques to enhance the participants' experience and provide practical approaches to managing this complex disease.

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify objective measures useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of asthma
  • Classify asthma severity and describe therapeutic options for treatment
  • Define the goals of patient education
  • Instruct patients in the use of asthma management devices and tools

The course content is divided into five modules:

1. Overview of Asthma
2. Diagnosis of Asthma
3. Treatment of Asthma
4. Asthma Education
5. Delivery Devices and Management Tools

Each module focuses on the acquisition of new knowledge and provides applied methods for integrating that knowledge into practice.

The cost to participate is $45. Participants will receive a course manual and certification in Basic Asthma Management Skills. All participants have the option to purchase a tool kit with sample placebo metered dose and dry powder inhalers, spacer, and peak flow meter for $15.

The next BAMS course will take place on Wednesday, April 24, 2002. Registration deadline is Friday, April 19, 2002. Facilitator training will take place April 23-24, 2002. Those interested in facilitator training must have attended a previous BAMS course.
