Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship
Pediatric respiratory diseases are a major cause for concern in the United States and around the world. Many such diseases, particularly asthma, are becoming more common and more severe as the years pass. Yet, the number of board-certified pediatric pulmonologists-who are trained to treat such diseases as infant bronchiolitis, cystic fibrosis, and asthma-remains woefully inadequate. Indeed, we have only one pediatric pulmonologist for every 280,000 children in the U.S., and the 42 accredited pediatric pulmonary training programs nationwide produce an average of only 35 graduates each year. In other areas of the world, especially the developing nations, the need is even greater.
Our goal is to develop the next generation of educationally and clinically focused pediatric pulmonologists by training new physicians, providing state-of-the-art medical care, and advancing that care through rigorous clinical investigation. To accomplish our goal, we hope to establish a Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship backed by an endowment that would provide permanent funding for the program.
A gift of $300,000 or more would establish the endowment and would be named in the donor's honor. Or a donor may provide a gift to fund an individual 3-year fellowship; it too would be named in honor of the donor. The cost for training a pediatric pulmonologist fellow for three years is $135,000. These and other goals of the Arizona Respiratory Center provide a unique opportunity for community supporters to partner with us in accomplishing our vital mission.
