How to Make a Gift
Endowments
An endowment is a permanent fund in which the principal is protected in perpetuity and only the interest is expended. With strong endowment support, the Arizona Respiratory Center will be able to maintain a consistent standard of excellence despite economic fluctuations and changing State budget allocations. Endowments create a lasting legacy of support and are critical for both key positions and major programs in the fight against respiratory disease.
Several types of endowed gifts are possible:
Endowed Faculty Chairs
The gift of an endowed chair is the most significant way to provide valuable support for the continuing achievements of senior physicians and scientists of the highest distinction. At major universities nationwide, including the University of Arizona, an endowed chair is regarded as the ultimate recognition of faculty achievement. The Center currently has one endowed chair, the Swift-McNear Professor of Pediatrics, held by the Center's Director, Fernando D. Martinez, MD. A gift of $1,500,000 or more will fully endow a chair in the Arizona Respiratory Center.
Endowed Professorships
Endowed professorships allow the Center to recognize excellence in the university community by singling out a scholar and scientist for extraordinary achievement, significant contributions, dedicated scholarship and service, and superb teaching and research. The endowment provides supplemental support for research assistance, travel, innovative teaching projects, patient care initiatives, and other activities of distinguished faculty. A gift of $500,000 or more will fully endow a professorship.
Endowed faculty chairs and professorships will enable the Arizona Respiratory Center to remain competitive when recruiting new talent and will allow the Center to retain existing talented faculty. Opportunities for endowed faculty chairs and endowed professorships at the Arizona Respiratory Center are available in areas such as Pediatric Pulmonology, Adult Pulmonology, Critical Care Medicine, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, and Epidemiology.
Endowed Fellowships
Endowed fellowships provide funding to support outstanding graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and sub-specialty resident physicians. A gift of $300,000 will fully endow a fellowship. The Center has two existing fellowships that could become fully endowed by additional financial assistance. They are the Robert and Kaye Barbee Fellowship in Adult Pulmonary Medicine and the Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship.
Endowed Research
Endowed research funds provide a constant source of support that can be available for exploring new research leads and ideas by young investigators. This stable source funds serves as "seed money" to plant new ideas, harvest data, and then pursue additional funding through grants.
Endowed Lectureships
Endowed lectureships provide a stable source of funding to bring leading researchers and scholars to the University of Arizona for scholarly lectures. Currently, the Center hosts the Benjamin Burrows Lung Immunology Distinguished Speaker Seminar Series. A gift of $100,000 or more would create an endowment for this lectureship.
All endowments can be given over a period of five years and all endowments provide naming opportunities for donors. To learn more about the vital role you can play in supporting an endowment at the Arizona Respiratory Center, please contact:
