UA's Arizona Respiratory Center Research Study to Find More Effective Asthma Treatments for Children Seeks Participants

Researchers at the University of Arizona's Arizona Respiratory Center are seeking participants for a research study to determine the preferred treatment method for children with mild-moderate persistent asthma. To be included in this study, children must be between 6-14 years of age, have mild-moderate asthma and be available to participate in this program for approximately 12 months.

As a member of the Childhood Asthma Research Education (CARE) Network, Arizona Respiratory Center is one of five clinical centers nationwide charged with evaluating treatments for children with asthma. Since CARE was founded in 1999 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Arizona Respiratory Center has led several successful research studies focused on preventing and treating childhood asthma.

"The current study, The Pediatric Asthma Controller Trial (PACT) has the potential to change the approach to the management of mild-moderate persistent childhood asthma," says Wayne Morgan, MD, associate director of the Arizona Respiratory Center and UA professor of pediatrics and physiology. The PACT study will evaluate how three different controller therapies differ in their effect on airway obstruction as well as medication compliance over 12 months of treatment.

"The PACT study will make an important medical contribution that will guide practitioners in deciding upon first-line therapy in children with mild to moderate asthma," Dr. Morgan says.

Parents who are interested in enrolling a child with asthma in the PACT clinical trial should call Anna Valencia at (520) 626-9543. Direct benefits to study participants will include all study medications for a 12-month period, as well as access to an asthma specialist during the study. Participants will be compensated for time and effort based on the number of completed visits. Transportation and parking fees will be paid by the study.

EDITORS NOTE: The Arizona Respiratory Center was designated the first Center of Excellence at the UA College of Medicine 1971. Today, the internationally known Center combines the highest caliber of research, clinical care and teaching. The Center is recognized as one of the top institutions for respiratory care.
