Dear Faculty, Staff and Friends of the Arizona Respiratory Center,

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Benjamin Burrows, M.D., founder of Respiratory Sciences at the University of Arizona, passed away yesterday at the age of 74. Dr. Burrows was an internationally recognized authority on respiratory disease, a wonderful clinician beloved by his patients, and dear friend to his colleagues at the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Burrows received his M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1949 at the age of 20. After service in the Air Force and an appointment at the University of Chicago, he was recruited to the faculty of the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 1968, becoming one of the College's founding faculty.

Dr. Burrows headed a study of obstructive lung disease that lasted nearly 25 years and involved more than 5,000 people. This study, called a "national resource" by reviewers at the National Institutes of Health, led to the creation of the respiratory sciences division and the Respiratory Sciences Center, now called the Arizona Respiratory Center, the first of seven Centers of Excellence at the College of Medicine. The study was the longest continually funded Specialized Center Of Research (SCOR) grant by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Burrows is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughters Jan Burrows, Susan Theobald and Lynn Evans, son Stephen Burrows and grandchildren Jeffrey Theobald, Mark Oberdries, Rachel Evans and Jamie Burrows, all of Tucson.

A memorial for Dr. Burrows will be held on August 7 at 5:30. This public service will be held in Kiewit Auditorium.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his memory to the Arizona Respiratory Center/University of Arizona Foundation, PO Box 245030, Tucson, AZ 85724.
